Boca Raton's Dock Rules in Plain Terms
Boca Raton has more varied water than most cities its size, and dock builders here work on Lake Boca Raton, the Intracoastal, Lake Wyman, the Hillsboro Canal along the southern city limit and the El Rio Canal. The Boca Raton Inlet opens to the ocean at the southeast corner of the lagoon. Each of those settings carries different design questions, but the city's own standards set the frame for all of them.
Elevation: a floor and a ceiling
The city's design criteria for waterway features set the minimum elevation of any new or replaced seawall or dock at 4.0 feet NAVD88, with a maximum of 6.0 feet. That band matters when you replace an older dock that sits low: the new one has to come up to at least four feet, which may mean the seawall needs a taller cap to match.
How far a dock can reach
On single-family lots, freestanding docks may protrude no more than six to eight feet waterward of the seawall, with the exact limit tied to canal width under City Code Section 22-58. Structures must also stay inside lines drawn at 45 degrees from the seawall at each side property line, and the water side of a seawall sits on the property line under Section 26-146. Bulkhead lines along the Intracoastal, the east shore of Lake Wyman and Lake Boca Raton are set by Sections 22-31 and 22-32.
In practice, this means many Boca docks are narrow, parallel platforms, and lifts often sit beside them rather than out at the end.
New dock construction here
We start with the survey and the canal width, then lay out the dock inside the 45-degree lines and the protrusion limit. Pilings go in first, then framing and decking. Composite decking is a common choice because it handles the sun well, and its weight is not an issue on a properly framed dock. If a lift is part of the plan, we place it so the boat does not cross the side lines when raised.
Manatee zones on Lake Boca
Florida's manatee rule for Palm Beach County makes the Intracoastal area from Palmetto Park Road south to the Camino Real Bridge a year-round slow speed zone, including Lake Boca Raton east to the A1A bridge over the inlet. The city's manatee page notes the animals are mostly seen in winter in tidal waters and that protection zones are marked with orange and white signs.
Some history behind the water
The lagoon that holds Lake Boca was dredged in 1894 and 1895 as part of the Florida East Coast Canal, later deepened by the federal government and renamed the Intracoastal Waterway. Federal work between 1960 and 1965 improved the channel to ten feet deep and 125 feet wide. The Hillsboro Canal, dug from 1911 to 1914, forms the city's straight southern edge.

Boca Raton Questions
How far out can my dock go in Boca Raton?
City criteria allow single-family freestanding docks to protrude six to eight feet past the seawall, depending on canal width under Section 22-58, and the dock must stay within 45-degree lines from your side property lines.
My dock sits below four feet. Does it have to be raised when I replace it?
Under the city's waterway criteria, a new or replaced dock or seawall has a 4.0 foot NAVD88 minimum, so a replacement generally comes up to that level.
Where does a boat lift go if the dock can only reach a few feet?
Often beside the dock, inside the side lines, rather than at the end. We lay it out with the raised boat in mind so nothing crosses into the neighbor's area.
