Docks for Inlet Runs and Canal Lots

Boynton Beach sits on the mainland side of the Intracoastal, across from Gulf Stream and Manalapan, and dock builders here work on waterfront between the Boynton (C-16) Canal and the Intracoastal. The Boynton Inlet, officially the South Lake Worth Inlet, was cut in 1917 and gives boats a direct route to the ocean. For owners on the water, that inlet is a big reason to keep a boat at home instead of at a marina.

Manatee zones shape the waterfront

Florida's manatee rule for Palm Beach County puts much of Boynton's water in year-round slow speed zones. The waters from the Lantana Avenue Bridge south to a line near the East Ocean Avenue Bridge are slow speed, except the marked Intracoastal channel. The C-16 canal east of U.S. 1 is also slow speed year-round, while the marked inlet channel itself is excluded.

For dock owners, slower traffic means less wake against pilings. For construction, it means agencies pay attention to manatee protection, and in-water work follows those protection measures.

New dock construction

A new Boynton dock usually starts with three questions: how deep is the water at low tide, how wide is the canal or shoreline, and what boat will it serve. On the C-16 and side canals, depth and width limit the layout. On the Intracoastal, wakes and current call for heavier pilings and framing.

We build fixed docks on treated or concrete pilings, with framing spaced for the decking you choose. If you want lights, outlets or a lift motor, we plan the electrical path during design so it is not an afterthought.

Adding a lift

Owners who run the inlet often want a lift so the boat is ready to go and not sitting in salt water. Four-post and elevator lifts both work here, depending on how the dock is laid out and whether the seawall can carry part of the load.

Bridges and history

Boynton's first bridge across the Intracoastal opened in 1911 at Ocean Avenue. A new federally funded bridge followed in 1935, and a second crossing opened along Woolbright Road in 1967. The town was incorporated in 1920 with the approval of 48 of 50 qualified voters, and the oceanfront section later split off to become Ocean Ridge.

Seawalls

If your dock ties into an older seawall, we inspect it for cracks, leaning and soil loss before adding load. Repairs to the cap or the wall itself can often be done in the same project as the dock.

Boynton Beach Water Facts

  • Ocean access. The South Lake Worth Inlet, also called the Boynton Inlet, was created in 1917 to connect the southern Lake Worth Lagoon to the ocean.
  • Canal slow zone. Rule 68C-22.009 makes the Boynton (C-16) Canal east of U.S. 1 a year-round manatee slow speed zone.
  • Waterway slow zone. Waters from the Lantana Avenue Bridge south to marker 52 near East Ocean Avenue are slow speed year-round, outside the marked channel.
  • Bridge history. The first Intracoastal bridge opened at Ocean Avenue in 1911, with a Woolbright Road crossing added in 1967.

Boynton Beach Questions

Do manatee zones limit what I can build?

They mostly affect permitting and how in-water work is done. Agencies review projects in manatee areas, and construction follows protection steps. We account for that in the schedule.

Can I build a dock on the C-16 canal?

Many C-16 lots have docks. Canal width, depth and setbacks decide what fits, and we check those during the site visit.

How do I pick between a four-post and an elevator lift?

Elevator lifts mount to the seawall and suit narrow water. Four-post lifts stand on their own pilings and handle heavier boats. Your wall condition and canal width usually decide it.
