Composite Decking for a Salt Water Dock
Composite dock decking is a popular upgrade in Pompano Beach for owners tired of splinters, sanding and refinishing wood boards in the salt air. Composite boards are made from wood fibers or other fillers bound with plastic, often with a protective outer shell. They do not rot the way wood does, need no stain, and hold their color longer in strong sun. The tradeoff is a higher upfront cost and a few details that matter more on a dock than on a backyard deck.
Check the framing first
Composite boards usually outlast the wood framing underneath them. Putting new boards on rotten joists means tearing them off again in a few years. So the first step is a look under the dock: pilings, stringers, joists and connectors. If repairs are needed, they happen before the new decking goes down. Composite also needs closer joist spacing than many older wood docks have, so some frames need extra joists.
Heat and color
Composite boards get hotter in direct sun than most wood, and darker colors get hotter than light ones. On a dock in full Florida sun, a lighter color and a textured surface make bare feet happier. Manufacturers publish heat and slip data for their boards, and we can bring samples so you can compare them on your own dock.
Gaps, fasteners and drainage
Composite expands and contracts with temperature more than wood does, so gap spacing at ends and between boards follows the maker's instructions. Hidden fastener systems or color-matched screws give a clean look and fewer exposed heads. Good gaps also let rain and splash drain quickly, which matters on a dock that sees afternoon storms most of the summer.
Composite or wood?
Treated wood costs less and can be repaired one board at a time with common materials. Composite costs more but skips the yearly sanding and sealing and resists rot and splintering. If you plan to keep the house for years, composite usually wins over time; if the dock may be replaced soon, wood can make more sense.
Permits for decking work
Broward County requires a license for work over its waters, and that can include decking replacement depending on scope. Your city may also need a building permit, especially if framing is replaced. We confirm what applies before work starts.
Caring for composite on the water
Rinse salt and bird droppings off regularly, sweep debris out of the gaps and use a cleaner approved by the board maker. Avoid metal shovels and harsh solvents. Mildew can show up in shaded spots and usually washes off with the right cleaner.

Composite Dock Decking Questions
Can composite go on my existing dock frame?
Often, if the framing is sound and joists are close enough together. We check and add joists or make repairs first when needed.
Does composite decking get hot?
It can, especially darker colors in full sun. Lighter colors and textured boards stay more comfortable.
How much does composite dock decking cost?
Bob Vila's guide lists composite boards at $5 to $12 per square foot for materials and $5 to $15 for labor on simple layouts. Framing repairs add to that.
Is composite slippery when wet?
Textured composite boards are designed for grip, but any surface can get slick with algae. Regular cleaning helps.
