River Docks in the Island City
Wilton Manors is nicknamed the Island City because the North and South Forks of the Middle River nearly surround it, and that river is where dock builders spend their time here. The river is tidal, and docks along it deal with rising and falling water, stormwater flows and the same king tides that affect the rest of Broward County.
Dock repair on tidal river frontage
River docks wear differently from ocean-side docks. Water levels change through the day, so pilings spend half their time wet and half dry, and that cycle is hard on wood. Freshwater and stormwater mixing into the river can carry debris that strikes pilings during heavy rain.
When we inspect a Wilton Manors dock, we check pilings at the high and low water lines, the condition of bolts and brackets where framing meets pilings, and whether the deck has settled or tilted. Many repairs are targeted: replacing a few boards, sistering a cracked joist or wrapping a piling. Others call for new framing on existing pilings, or a complete rebuild.
The city's seawall ordinance
The city's seawall page says Ordinance 2020-002 requires seawalls to be raised to five feet when new construction or a substantial renovation takes place. Even without a project, a wall must be raised if tidal flooding or erosion through it is reaching neighboring property or roadways. The same page notes that docks and boats must be set back from property lines and from the center of the waterway, which matters on the narrower stretches of the river.
What the city's flood study found
Wilton Manors' 2024 sea level rise vulnerability report describes conditions every river owner should know:
- Average high tide in the river rose from about 0.5 feet NAVD88 in 1985 to about 1.0 foot today
- King tides raise high tides by an average of 1.5 feet
- The FEMA 100-year storm surge in the Middle River is about 4.5 feet NAVD88
- Roughly 90 city stormwater outfalls discharge into the river
The report says areas nearest the river face the largest impacts and that the eastern part of the city needs flood work before 2040.
Manatees on the Middle River
The Middle River is a year-round slow speed zone under Florida's manatee rule for Broward County. Boats should be moving slowly past your dock, which helps limit wake damage, and in-water construction here is reviewed with manatee protection in mind.
Lifts and davits on the river
A small lift or a set of davits keeps a boat out of tidal water and off the dock during storms. On narrow river frontage, davits mounted to a sound seawall cap are sometimes the simplest fit. We confirm the wall can take the load before recommending them.

Wilton Manors Questions
Does Wilton Manors require me to raise my seawall?
Under Ordinance 2020-002, yes when you build new or do a substantial renovation, and also when tidal flooding through or over your wall is reaching a neighbor's property or the street.
Can a river dock be repaired instead of rebuilt?
Often. Replacing boards, sistering joists or wrapping a damaged piling can extend a dock's life. If several pilings are failing at the tide line, a rebuild usually makes more sense.
How close to my neighbor can a dock go?
The city requires setbacks from property lines and from the center of the waterway. We confirm the exact numbers with the city for your lot during design.
