Working Around Dania's Manatee Zones
Dania Beach began as Modello and became the Town of Dania in 1904, and dock builders here work on water that Florida regulates closely for manatees: the Dania Cut-off Canal and the Intracoastal near Dania Beach Boulevard. The city also holds part of the land under Port Everglades, so boat traffic and big-ship activity are part of the setting.
What the manatee rule says here
Florida's rule for Broward County sets several zones that touch Dania Beach waterfront:
- The Dania Cut-off Canal is a year-round slow speed zone
- The Intracoastal from the Dania Cut-off Canal to south of Dania Beach Boulevard is slow speed year-round
- The South New River Canal and Dania Cut-off area is idle speed from November 15 through March 31 and slow speed the rest of the year
For dock owners, that means quieter water and less wake. For construction, it means agencies look carefully at in-water work and expect protection steps on site.
Dock repair and rebuilding
Many Dania docks are older wood structures. Salt water, sun and wet-dry cycles wear pilings at the tide line and loosen hardware over time. We inspect pilings, framing, decking and hardware, then recommend targeted repair or a rebuild. Where pilings are solid, new framing and decking on the old piles can give an older dock a long second life.
New docks and lifts
For new construction, we start with your survey and water depth, then lay out a dock that fits the canal and the boat. Lifts are common for owners who want the boat out of the water between trips; for small boats and personal watercraft, davits on a sound seawall can work.
Seawalls and the county standard
Broward County's 2020 seawall policy applies to tidally influenced cities and requires new or substantially repaired walls to reach five feet NAVD88. A dock project that costs more than half of a full-shoreline wall can count as substantial work under the county model, so we measure wall height before we design.
A city that keeps growing
After the 1926 hurricane, most of Dania left Hollywood and reincorporated as a city in 1927. It took the name Dania Beach in 1998, and in 2001 it annexed several unincorporated areas with about 3,600 residents. The 2020 census counted 31,723 people.

Dania Beach Questions
Do manatee zones slow down dock permits in Dania Beach?
They can add review time, since agencies consider manatee protection for in-water work. We plan for it and follow protection steps during construction.
My Dania dock is old wood. Is it worth saving?
It depends on what is under the boards. If the pilings are still solid at the tide line, new framing and decking can give it a second life; if several are soft or necked down, a rebuild is usually the better spend.
Are lifts allowed on the Dania Cut-off Canal?
Lifts are common on residential canals, but layout and permitting depend on canal width and your lot. We check those during the site visit.
